No firmware updates for this drive are available, however, either on the Dell site or on the NEC site. Further web-searching revealed the following two sites, each with the same files available for download:. Note that the firmware revision of the Dell drives is 1.
The readme. Rainier support. Rainier supported. Rainier function. Add TDK 90min media support. I am in no mood to destroy these drives, hence I have not applied the firmware update.
These machines were not cheap, but they were expected to work - The fact that they do not, due to outdated firmware, combined with the lack of any way for me to update the firmware safely, is something that I want to see addressed ASAP. We need either a Dell-specific firmware update, or replacement drives of a different type. I look forward to hearing from Dell support personnel at their earliest possible convenience. The last time I did this, I performed a quick erase of the same disk, and was able to burn files on it using the Dells.
This time, having performed a full erase, the Dell was unable to burn in Nero 6. In short, these machines now appear to become completely useless, with respect to burning CD-RW discs, after just a couple of burns, in addition to the problems already covered involving erasing files or formatting the disc. This is truly lovely, since that basically makes all CD-RW discs equivalent to CD-Rs but at about ten times the cost, and harder to read in older drives as well.
I'm surprised no one else has reported this problem, because it's quite general, but it may be that most folks aren't burning and erasing CD-RWs enough to notice. At any rate, I await a reply. This is a peer-to-peer forum, and if your waiting for any reply from Dell Support, it might not happen. Your best bet is to contact Dell tech support for the latest advice with this problem. Just as a point of interest, there are many posts on this and other forums concerning CDRW burning.
There seems to be little compatability between burners, when recording on one machine and burning or erasing on another machine. Most members on this forum will agree, that at the present cost of CD-R disks it's more convient to use them for transporting data back and forth. I think that I'm one of the old die-hard CD-RW users Packet Writing , and even between my 2 home machines, there is a lack of compatability.
Sometimes it will work and other times I get all kinds of errors and the disk needs to be re-formated All data gone Here is a link to another forum with similar problems and a lot of links for you to peruse. Maybe it will shed some light on the subject. Thanks for the response - You're right, of course, I should contact Dell Support directly, I just wanted others to be aware of this also, and not get completely frustrated as I did searching through the forums and the internet for information on this - It's always nice to know you're not the only one with a particular problem, even if a solution does not yet exist, and since I strongly suspect that new firmware would address this problem, and it's only Dell's lack of an OEM version of the firmware that prevents me from attempting this solution, it's the kind of thing people should know.
I have already done a thorough search of these forums, and the internet Google of course, web and groups both , but found nothing exactly like this problem. Llikewise, while I agree that CD-RW drives vary from drive to drive, that should never prevent me from formatting a disc - This would only explain an inability to read a disc on one machine if it was burned on another, which is a problem I explicitly do not have - I burned this disc with the NEC drive and read it in the my Yamaha, and vice-versa, with no problems before I lost the ability to burn on the NEC drive that is - It was the first drive to burn the disc, I should add, so it should explicitly not have a problem with doing so again.
For modern drives that are capable of recalibrating the laser power depending on the medium being used, it is necessary that the firmware has information for various kinds of media - If the firmware lacks such information, the result is that the drive can have severe problems with certain media. Likewise, I certainly agree that, in my current situation, CD-R discs or a memory stick, for that matter are much more likely to give me satisfactory results, and indeed, I plan to use those in the interim - But that's hardly the point.
To handle the drive I used NeroBurning Rom ver 5. Now I'm going to get more information on the drive using some utilities; for example, Nero Infotool which tells what formats and disc types the drive supports. The firmware version on the Nero's and Info's screenshots do not coincide because we changed it to make possible to test all its capabilities correctly.
Traditionally, we used two types of media - with cyanine and phthalocyanine coating. The number of the trade marks are 4, 2 of each type, to get more information on how the drive treats discs of different trade marks. The burning results will be partially represented in the graphical form. We also checked whether the drive can burn correctly cyanine discs at the minimal speed, - this mode is mostly used by fans of music to get highest-quality records.
Unfortunately, we didn't have 24x mb media at hand, and used mb discs. Formatting time min. Verbatim 10x Verbatim 24x With the new firmware version 2. Here is how the drive handles the CD-RW media in this format. CD-RW drive Formatting time min. Burn time min. The most important part of the tests, and we here used the device described in this article.
In general, it perfectly copes with this test. The detailed information on the tested parameters is given in the help file to the Nero CD Speed test program. If you don't want to download the utility, then here you can find the HTMl help file.
