Take some time with a strong light to clean out the dust and dirt, then trace down all your computer cables so you can get the right cable to the correct spot. Disconnect everything but the memory, the hard drive, and the power supply as a start so you don't have so many things to figger out Then once it is working, we can help with the improvements. How would you go about changing or removing the service tag, and if you did remove it, how would it change the problem.
If you don't have the disk, be sure you are the registered owner, and then call Dell for a copy of the Dell Windows XP disk. They will usually send it free. If you are not the registered owner, Dell has a place on their web site under Help and Support, where you can register, but you will then have to wait 15 business days for them to verify the computer has not been reported stolen.
I also mentionded to use a spare hdd in case there really is no other way of bootinig the device. I wont read it anyway. Of course I would expect you to try another optical drive as a trial. I didn't think every step was needed. If you ever figger out how to remove the Service Tag, and if it then affects the password, we will be haning on your every word. Similar threads. I was never able to install Mint 17 Cinnamon, so I decided to try some other distros. I tried several versions of Ubuntu, Debian 7. I decided that since I had actually been able to install Mint 17 xfce once, I'd stick to that. After probably a dozen or more attempts, I have still not got a complete install. The install CD always boots to the desktop OK. Sometimes when I click the start button, it locks up and although I can still move the mouse cursor, nothing else works.
Sometimes it locks up at partitioning the hard drive. Several times I have gotten through the copying files and installing system to the configuring hardware, where it locks up. A couple times the screen just went blank, and when I tried to reboot, the grub menu showed Mint 17 in the list, but it would not boot. Several times it appeared to have finished the install, but there was no bootloader, so I booted into Puppy and installed grub.
Then when I rebooted, it showed Mint in the list of available OSes, but it would not boot it. I tried adding forcepae to the boot configuration line, and that seems to have no effect. The last time I tried to install it locked up at configuring hardware, and when I tried to reboot into Mint I got an "error no such partition" message. I'm ordinarily a patient person, but I've been at this for over a week and I'm tired of watching it go through most of the install then locking up.
Anybody got any ideas? Something to add to the boot configuration line? A different distro? I guess I should mention I have run a complete hard drive diagnostic and a memory test, both checked out OK.

If it was simply hardware incompatibility, you could except the same same failure for each install attempt. Since it's inconsistent, I'm leaning to thinking the Dell is pining for the fjords. Four small screws hold the drive in the caddy. Be very careful removing these screws. Make sure you have the right size screwdriver. I stripped the head of one of the screws removing it. Fortunately, I was able to replace it with one of the similar but larger screws that came with the Apricorn ez upgrade kit that I used to clone my drive.
Once your new drive has been installed, Windows will show the GB drive as having a capacity of only GB.

The plastic adapter is the biggest reason why most folks have problems getting the drive to work. I don't know if your model has the adapter or not, but on my model the adapter was difficult to spot because it looked similar to the pins on the new drive. The adapter sat on top of the pins of the dell drive.
